open knows how to open/edit/etc. files
Open keeps a per-user database mapping pairs of actions (open, edit, convert, …) and file extensions to command invocations, and applies them upon request. If it fails to find an application for an (action, extension) tuple, it will ask the user what to use, and record that application for later use.
